Blue Pigments – Quick Usage Guide (Oil-Based vs Water-Based)
This guide covers four blue pigments with different chemical structures and application systems. Phthalocyanine Blue B and BGS are organic pigments for oil-based systems; Ultramarine 5008, Ultramarine, and Water-Soluble Blue are inorganic/water-soluble pigments for water-based systems.
🛢️ Oil-Based Organic Pigments
Phthalocyanine Blue B (PB15:0)
Product Overview: α-type copper phthalocyanine pigment with a bright reddish-blue shade. Offers excellent heat resistance, lightfastness, solvent resistance, and oil resistance. Mainly used in oil-based gravure printing inks, offset inks, metal decorating inks, coatings, and plastics. Can be used in water-based inks after special treatment, but the reddish shade is not recommended for three- or four-color process printing.
Recommended Dosage:
Printing Inks: 5% to 15% of ink formulation
Plastics: 0.5% to 2% of resin weight
Paints & Coatings: 3% to 10% of formulation
Key Applications: Oil-based printing inks, offset inks, metal decorating inks, solvent-based inks, paints, coatings, rubber, plastics, art paints.
Phthalocyanine Blue BGS (PB15:3)
Product Overview: β-type copper phthalocyanine pigment with a bright greenish-blue shade. Offers excellent heat stability, easy dispersion, and good oil resistance. Suitable for a wide range of applications including plastics (PE, PP, PVC, EVA, etc.), offset inks, solvent inks, paints, and coatings.
Recommended Dosage:
Printing Inks: 5% to 15% of ink formulation
Plastics: 0.3% to 1.5% of resin weight
Paints & Coatings: 3% to 8% of formulation
Powder Coatings: 2% to 5% of formulation
Key Applications: Plastic products (EVA, PVC, LDPE, HDPE, PP, etc.), offset inks, solvent inks, paints (alkyd, acrylic, epoxy), automotive coatings, industrial coatings, rubber, art paints, textile printing pastes.
💧 Water-Based Inorganic / Water-Soluble Pigments
Ultramarine 5008 (C.I. Pigment Blue 29)
Product Overview: Inorganic pigment with a bright reddish-blue shade and a fresh, clear tone unmatched by other blues. Has good hydrophilicity and is suitable for water-based systems. Excellent lightfastness (Grade 8) and water resistance (Grade 5). Heat resistant up to 300°C. Not acid-resistant – decomposes and changes color upon contact with acid.
Recommended Dosage:
Water-based Inks: 5% to 15% of ink formulation
Paints & Coatings: 3% to 8% of formulation
Plastics: 0.5% to 2% of resin weight
Whitening/Color Correction: 0.1% to 0.5% for whitening effect
Key Applications: Water-based printing inks, paints and coatings (both solvent-based and water-based systems), plastics, powder coatings, color correction (eliminates yellowish tint in white paints and materials), art paints. Complies with FDA regulations.
Ultramarine (Ultramarine Blue)
Product Overview: Inorganic blue pigment with a beautiful, vivid shade. Insoluble in water, alkali-resistant, heat-resistant, and extremely stable against sunlight and weathering. Has good hydrophilicity but is not acid-resistant – decomposes upon contact with acid.
Recommended Dosage:
Water-based Paints: 3% to 8% of formulation
Printing Inks: 5% to 10% of ink formulation
Plastics: 0.5% to 2% of resin weight
Whitening Applications: 0.1% to 0.5% for color correction
Key Applications: Water-based paints, printing inks, artists' paints, plastics, rubber, whitening and yellowing correction in white paints and materials.
Water-Soluble Blue
Product Overview: Water-soluble blue colorant that dissolves completely in water to form a clear blue solution. Suitable for various water-based liquid coloring applications.
Recommended Dosage:
Liquid Products: 0.01% to 0.5% of total liquid weight (adjust based on desired shade)
Water-based Inks: 1% to 5% of ink formulation
Craft & DIY: Dissolve in water and adjust concentration as needed
Key Applications: Water-based liquid coloring (glass water, detergents, coolants, etc.), water-based inks, paper dyeing, textile dyeing, crafts, art projects, and various industrial water-based colorant applications.
⚠️ Important Notes
Oil-Based Organic Pigments (Phthalocyanine Blue B & BGS):
Not water-soluble – must be dispersed in oil-based or solvent-based systems through mechanical mixing
For plastics, blend pigment with resin before processing (injection molding, extrusion, etc.)
For inks and paints, incorporate during the grinding or mixing stage
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
Water-Based Inorganic Pigments (Ultramarine 5008 & Ultramarine):
Not water-soluble but have good hydrophilicity – disperse well in water-based systems
Acid-sensitive – avoid acidic environments as they will decompose and change color
Excellent lightfastness and weather resistance – suitable for outdoor applications
Great for whitening – effectively removes yellowish tint from white paints and materials
Water-Soluble Blue:
Completely dissolves in water – ready to use
Prepare fresh solution for best results
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
